Related California debuts soulful contemporary art collection at The Avery

Related California is pleased to present an impressive art collection expertly curated by Gallery Wendi Norris at its newly opened residential building, The Avery. Located in the heart of San Francisco’s burgeoning Transbay District, The Avery’s collection features twenty-two contemporary artworks by fifteen artists, six of which are local to the Bay Area. The collection instills a sense of place, history and human connection through diverse mediums from painting to video installation. Providing further insight, The Avery will publish a catalogue on the collection, including original essays on the curation, artists and artworks by local writer and arts editor Timothy Don.

The creative experience begins at The Shops at Avery Lane, where residents and the public are greeted by Berlin-based artist Alicja Kwade’s sculptural abstraction, Absorption (2018). The sculpture utilizes mirrors and stones to produce an optical illusion that tests viewers' perceptions while creating an awe-inspiring experience of dimensionality, putting into perspective the scale of the universe as we know it. With Absorption, Kwade seeks to reframe our notions of truth, reality and fantasy. Coming off the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s lauded summer rooftop exhibition, Kwade’s work was also recently featured at the 57th Venice Biennale and the Louisiana Museum in Copenhagen. Absorption marks the artist’s first permanent public installation in the United States.

The journey continues in the lobby at Avery 450, the luxury rental component of The Avery, where a new commission, Infinite Regress LXI (2019) by Eamon Ore-Giron, welcomes residents with a painting of bright geometric elements on raw linen. These abstract, beautifully rendered symbols showcase a pictorial, universal language in a contemporary context that unites across cultures and geographic lines.

Proceeding into the lobby’s luxurious gathering space, residents encounter Mika Tajima’s transformative woven painting, Negative Entropy (NYU Data Center, Orange, Double) (2018). Next door inside of the entrance to The Avery, residents enjoy Reverberation #60 (2019) by Val Britton from her series inspired by philosopher Gaston Bachelard's The Poetics of Space.

The Avery’s art collection extends into the sprawling 30,000 square feet of dedicated amenity space, which spans over three floors and features an outdoor landscaped terrace. Stepping off the elevator on the 7th floor, residents are greeted by Lava Thomas’ His Royal Discography (2016), an installation piece constructed of tambourines that celebrates the dynamic life of musician Prince. In the tech lounge, residents can take in the mesmerizing work of Ranu Mukherjee in the video piece Breach (2015), which consists of hundreds of layers of photography, paintings and digital imagery.

In the 32nd floor elevator vestibule, a pair of Klea McKenna’s black and white photograms, Rainstorm #20 (2016) and Rainstorm #21 (2016), provide the perfect entry to the floor’s amenity spaces. The demonstration kitchen features Rachelle Reichert’s Salt Diamond (2018), made with salt taken from the San Francisco Bay. Two delicate collage pieces by Ambreen Butt, Shoaib and Illyas from the series Say My Name (2018), adorn the floor’s pre-function space, transitioning to the game room where Julio Cesar Morales’ photographic series Day Dreaming (2017) is thought-provoking in its layout and use of color, which is echoed in Ranu Mukherjee’s vibrant work on paper Today is a surprise (2018).

Generous amenities continue on the 33rd floor, where Chris Ofili’s prints Last Night, New Day (2008) and Rainbow (2008) create a dramatic entrance to the fireplace lounge where the floating fireplace looking out to stunning views of the Bay is flanked by two celestial cyanotype prints by San Francisco-based artist Ala Ebtekar: Azimuth (1801) (2016) and Azimuth (1802) (2016).

Rounding out the collection in the formal dining room is the stunning photograph Roman Woman III (2013) by Sara VanDerBeek and pastel-on-paper triptych by local artist Peter de Swart, featuring unique artist frames.
